This page contains a key/legend for the archive OS maps used in the
Local Timeline. Originally referred to as a
Characteristic Sheet.
Some common map symbols in use are shown below as well as an index of
all the local archive OS maps available to view.
Bench Mark (B.M.)
These arrow
shaped marks on local buildings, walls and milestones are shown on the
map along with the recorded altitude. The oldest property in Badgers Mount has a 'Cut Bench Mark'
as well as the local Milestone.
Trig. Point
Trigonometrical Point
(or Trig. Station) can be seen on the early OS maps at the highest point
along Highland Road. A stone Trig. Point marks the position.
Buildings
In the earliest maps buildings are
shows as hatched symbols, later they became solid/shaded. An outline
symbol shows were a property was either under construction or planned at
the time of the survey.
Areas
Parcels of land are numbered with the area
in acres shown below.
Embankment
From the earliest local OS map an embankment
can be seen were there is an air-shaft for the railway and where the
first properties in Badgers Mount appeared. Early
conveyancing plans
(1894) show a 'Quarry' note.
Published in 1923.
A Characteristics Sheet is a legend or key to the map
symbols used. The symbols aren't always consistent as they changed over the years.
