 Summer 2001 Newsletter

Welcome to the Association's Summer Newsletter. The Association recently held it's Annual General Meeting in the Memorial Hall, Highland Road and this was attended by 32 members with apologies from 13 others. Several Committee changes took place during the latter part of 2000 and the early part of 2001 - Trevor Simmons resigned as Chairman, followed by June Begg and Dawn Cooper. However, following these sudden resignations we were able to co-opt two further members namely Alison Chase and Chris Lucas. At the AGM no further members were elected to the Committee and thus the Road Stewards for 2001 are as follows :

GORDON PLUMB (534279) - one half of Highland Road.
TRACEY McCARTNEY (534471) - Milton Avenue & Johnsons Avenue.
MARGARET TUTT (534404) - Other half of Highland Road.
VIVIENNE CLARKE (532987) - Crest Close and half of Old London Road.
MYRA MARSHALL (534745) - Badgers Road.
JOYCE PITT-PAYNE (534344) - One side of Orpington By-Pass.
LEN COTTLE (534304) - Other side of Orpington By-Pass.
CHRIS LUCAS (533312) - Badgers Rise and half of Old London Road.
ALISON CHASE (53 ) - Sandersons Avenue, Christies Avenue & Woodlands View.
The Committee currently has 9 members but should under it's Constitution have 10. If you think that you would like to join us and make YOUR community Association as effective as possible please contact any Committee Member for further information.

There are several forthcoming events to notify you of :-

WHIST DRIVE

THURSDAY, 19TH JULY 2001

This will take place in the Memorial Hall commencing at 7.30 p.m. Entrance to the Whist Drive costs £1.50 per person and tea & coffee are available. Mr Inwood, the Whist Drive organiser, also holds a raffle during the evening. Those who attended the meeting in April gave reports of a very successful evening. All are very welcome so please turn up and have a wonderful time! For those interested Halstead also holds regular Whist Drives which are advertised in the Post Office.

BARN DANCE

SATURDAY, 6TH OCTOBER 2001

This will also take place in the Memorial Hall.
Arrangements for this are being finalised now. The entertainment has been booked and tickets will be available very shortly. If you are interested in attending this event please contact Myra on 534735 for further information or to secure tickets.

A Quiz Night and another New Year Party are also in the pipeline so look out for further details of these once arrangements are finalised.

~~~~~~
The Sevenoaks Mobile Library parks in the Memorial Hall Car Park every other Thursday. The next few are 26th July, 9th August and 16th August - each between 10.00 a.m. and 10.15 a.m. PLEASE try to use this service whenever possible as we will lose it if it continues to be poorly attended.
We have been asked to mention the availability of Tennis Courts for hire in Shoreham Village. Hire Rates and tickets are available from Shoreham Village shop. Allotments are also available for rent if anyone is interested. Please contact Mr Fallon on 524893 for more information.
Progress on the Village Sign is slow at present. The Sign is now complete and ready for erection. Planning Permission has finally been granted BUT insurance of the Sign proves awkward. The Committee are actively doing all they can to resolve this situation and hopefully the Sign will be erected before the end of 2001!
The Committee is also working hard to try and effect a reduction in the speed limit along the Orpington By-Pass. We have also requested Pedestrian Islands (similar to those at the end of Badgers Road) for the Highland Road junction with the By-Pass. Hopefully we will be able to report back with positive news on these issues in our next Newsletter.
It has been pointed out to the Committee that several dogs on the Mount roam freely. As you can appreciate this is dangerous to vehicles driving on the Mount and extremely unsafe for the animals concerned. Can we please ask that you try to ensure that your
Dog is kept securely within the curtilage of your own grounds.
If you feel that you have any matters that you like to have raised at a Committee Meeting please write to our Secretary c/o Sett Point, Highland Road. We will raise all issues at our next available Meeting and report back to you thereafter. Remember, for the Association to remain effective it must have input from it's members.
Last, but by no means least, a request from Halstead Nursery (within Halstead School, Otford Lane) for support at their Fun Day & Afternoon Boot Fair to raise funds for the Nursery. The Fun Day will take place on Saturday, 21st July between 1.00 p.m. and 4.00 p.m. An afternoon of entertainment, stalls and refreshments for all the family - they look forward to seeing you there! Should anyone be interested in organising a stall at the Fun Day please contact Debbie Stevens on 532235 - several Boot Fair stalls are still available at a cost of £10 each.
