FEBRUARY
UPDATE
Plans for a packed weekend of activities in Halstead to
help celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee (QDJ) weekend are now full
steam ahead.
A series of successful fundraising events and activities
before Christmas have ensured that all the events may proceed as planned.
The Committee would like to extend a big thank you to everyone who
supported this activity.
A newsletter update, including a full itinerary for the QDJ weekend, will
be distributed to all residents in Halstead and Badgers Mount very soon.
Royal Scarecrow building workshop & bunting challenge
In the meantime, some of the more imminent dates for your diary include a
Royal Scarecrow building workshop at 10am on Sunday 11th March in the
village hall. As per previous communications, we’re hoping that locals
will create and display outside their homes Royal-themed scarecrows. These
will be displayed in the run up to the QDJ weekend and prizes will be
awarded for the most Regal! We’re also planning a Scarecrow Parade as part
of the Family Fun Day on Monday 4th June.
The March workshop will be a fun and informal event designed to help get
the creative juices flowing, and to provide some ‘structural’ hints and
tips. It will be hosted by Dot Wooder and other members of the Halstead
Players, who have already immortalised Henry VIII (in scarecrow form at
least…). Henry will be joined on the day by Prince Charles in a Norfolk
outfit. Everybody is welcome to attend this free workshop – young and old
alike.
Also at the workshop, the WI will be showcasing their handy work so far on
their Royal ‘bunting challenge’. They are attempting to break the record
for the longest bunting in the World (as documented in the Guinness Book
of Records) by as much as a quarter of a mile – aiming for 2 miles’ worth
of continuous bunting!
Workshop attendees will have the opportunity to put their mark on this
historic piece of handy work. Sewing machines and tape will be provided!
For more information on the workshop and / or to confirm attendance,
please contact Dot Wooder on

Table Top Sale
A fundraiser will take place on Sunday 1st April in the form of a
Table Top Sale. This will be held in the village hall at 2pm. It’s the
perfect excuse for a clear-out of all those unwanted items, and a chance
to make some money in the process. Tables will be sold in advance at £10
each. Refreshments will also be sold and the event will attract a 50p
entry fee on the door. All proceeds from the table sales, refreshments and
entry fee will go to the QDJ funds.
If you are interested in taking a table at the event, please contact
Sheila Bent on 01959 532 342.
Road Stewards
Meanwhile, the QDJ Committee is calling for volunteers to act as Road
Stewards in the run up to the QDJ weekend. We want to ensure that as many
people as possible enjoy the planned festivities and Road Stewards will
play a key role in this regard. Each Steward will be responsible for
delivering newsletter updates to their particular road, in addition to
finding out potential attendee numbers for certain events. They will also
act as an additional source of information with regards to where to
purchase tickets etc.
If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Jean Peel on 01959
533 180.
Time capsule
As mentioned in our first newsletter, the Committee is keen to put
together a village memorial to mark this historic event. It was agreed
that a time capsule would be buried in the Church grounds. This will
contain a booklet and photographs, designed to provide a snapshot of
village life in 2012. A plaque will be placed in the Church stating that
the time capsule should be dug up in 25 years’ time.
The information for the booklet is currently being gathered and we would
welcome any comments from local residents with regards to ‘life in the
village in 2012’. Please contact Jean Peel with any contributions you
would like to make.
Updates
Finally, watch out for your copy of the next newsletter update, which will
be landing on your doormat very soon. Updates will also be included on the
Parish website, together with both the Halstead and Badgers Mount village
websites.
